Reston-Herndon AAUW Helps Orphan Foundation of America

  • On Thursday, September 27, 2007 from 12 to 2 PM, members of the Reston-Herndon AAUW joined members of Congress at the Capital Building in support of the Orphan Foundation of America (OFA), which provides continuing support for America’s foster youth who have graduated the foster care system.

    Through their care package programs, scholarships, and career counseling the OFA offers resources and  encouragement to young adult orphans in the pursuit of their education and success in life.

    So it was that there, in the majestic Mansfield Room of the Capital building that a bright and beaming team of OFA beneficiaries spoke about the great impact that OFA’s ongoing involvement has had in their lives. Joined by senators, congressmen and executives from corporate sponsors, these young adults stood strong and steeped in the spirit of gratitude. OFA’s National Events Director, Annalisa Assaadi, spoke of the great power which lies in communicating the simple message “You can do it! We know you can!” If you would like to get involved in supporting the OFA, consider contributing in the following ways:

  • Participate in the next Care Package event, to be held on Saturday, October 27th, 2007 from 9 AM to 1 PM at Montgomery College, 7977 Georgia Ave., Takoma Park, MD 20910;

  • Donate gift cards or other small items in the quantity of 500 – 2,500 to be included in the care packages;

  • Knit a red scarf to donate to the OFA’s Red Scarf Program (deadline Oct. 15);

  • Get in touch with the OFA if you know of any paid internships that would run from the end of May through mid July (6 weeks);

  • Visit the OFA’s website: www.orphan.org, to learn more about their mission and initiatives.
